Introduction to iPrescribe
Welcome to iPrescribe, an innovative, mobile e-prescribing app developed by DrFirst!
This article is for users registering for iPrescribe app on their own (self-registered).
To learn more about different accounts, visit iprescribe.com/pricing or contact your Account Manager.
This article outlines the major steps to begin e-prescribing from the app.
1. Prerequisite: Download iPrescribe from iPrescribe.com > Get Started, or the Google Play or Apple app stores.
2. Register for iPrescribe. Before you can begin e-prescribing, you will need to create a user profile and verify your personal identifiable information within the app.
3. Identity proofing through ID.me is a required part of the process to register for iPrescribe and a pre-requisite to e-prescribing.
4. Set up e-prescribing for non-controlled substances. After ID.me has verified your identity, the app will prompt you to accept terms of use, create security questions/answers, and set up an e-signature.
5. Enable Patient Finder to sync your patients’ data to the app.
After completing steps 1-5, you are ready to e-prescribe non-controlled substances! If you are a provider who will also need to electronically prescribe controlled substances (EPCS), continue to Step 6.
6. Activate e-prescribing of controlled substances (EPCS) for your account. From iPrescribe's main menu, you will initiate a multi-step process called Activate EPCS.
7. Add controlled substance tokens to your iPrescribe account to associate multiple EPCS authenticators that generate a one-time pin or one-time passcode (OTP) to your account. This action may prevent you from losing access to e-prescribing controlled substances in the future.
8. Sign up for PDMP/PMP (optional). Prerequisite: Completed step 6. If offered in your state, you may submit an in app request to see Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP)/Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) data.
You are ready to e-prescribe! To send controlled substance prescriptions to the pharmacy, you will always need to enter two-factor authentication.

Step 3: Set up e-prescribing in iPrescribe (non-controlled substances)
Prerequisites: Register for iPrescribe and Identity Proofing with ID.me
This article is for users registering for iPrescribe app on their own (self-registered).
To learn more about different accounts, visit iprescribe.com/pricing or contact your Account Manager.
After ID.me has verified your identity, you will need to complete the following 6 actions before you are able to prescribe non-controlled substances:
1. Opt in to enable push notifications; this allows the app to notify you of updates
2. Accept the terms of use
3. Create security questions and answers.
You will be prompted to choose 3 questions to strengthen your account security and facilitate password recovery.

As depicted in the above image, DrFirst requires your handwritten signature to transmit e-prescriptions to fax-only pharmacies or in the event of an EDI failure. If you choose not to submit your signature, Drfirst will be unable to attach it to prescriptions that default to fax. Pharmacies may contact you to verify the validity of prescriptions faxed without a signature.
5. Confirm your email address.
Once you enter your preferred email address, check your email to confirm the address you shared, then come back to iPrescribe.
If there is an issue with your email, we will ask you to confirm again. Change email at any time in Settings. Remember to check your SPAM folder if you do not see a confirmation email.

What is Patient Finder?
When you log in for the first time, iPrescribe will automatically search the databases to find and import your patients using our Patient Finder feature. If we don’t find all of your patients, you can easily add them (How to Add New Patients), or submit a request to have our Support Team assist you with a patient upload.
Existing users can access Patient Finder from the main dashboard.
Tap the menu icon ≡ in the top left corner > Settings > Patient Finder > Find My Patients.
Note: Even if we don't find all your patients today, iPrescribe will continuously run Patient Finder and load patient profiles as we find them. This will give you more complete patient data and mean less manual entry in the future
Step 5: Activate e-prescribing of controlled substances (EPCS) in iPrescribe
This article is for users registering for iPrescribe app on their own (self-registered).

15. Tap Activate to complete the process to set up e-prescribing of controlled substances.
You are now ready to prescribe!
Next steps
Once you finish step 15 and you receive the physical device you ordered in step 5 of this article, we highly recommend going to Add Controlled Substance Tokens.
Completing Add Controlled Substance Tokens will benefit you in two ways:
- Compliance with DEA regulations. The DEA requires the device that generates your one-time-pin for two-factor authentication be on a different device than the device you use to prescribe.
- Having a back up two-factor authentication device. If you lose access to your ID.me Authenticator app, existing phone, or get a new phone, having other authenticators associated to your account will help you avoid losing access to electronic prescribing of controlled substances in iPrescribe.
Step 6: Add controlled substance tokens to your iPrescribe account
Prerequisite: Activate E-prescribing of Controlled Substances (EPCS) in iPrescribe
This article is for users registering for iPrescribe app on their own (self-registered).
To learn more about different accounts, visit iprescribe.com/pricing or contact your Account Manager.
If you will electronically prescribe controlled substances in iPrescribe, we highly recommend that you associate multiple authenticators (tokens) that generate one-time pins (OTP) to your account.
This action may prevent you from losing access to e-prescribing controlled substances in the future.
There are 3 main tokens that you can add to your account today:
- ID.me Authenticator app (also called a soft token)
- Symantec VIP Access app (also called a soft token)
- Physical device (also called a fob or hard token) made by either Onespan or Symantec
In Activate EPCS in iPrescribe, you downloaded the ID.me Authenticator app and associated it with your account already.
