Effective December 2023, prescribers who have access to iPrescribe may enable iPrescribe Authenticator as a second two-factor authenticator (token) to e-prescribe controlled substances (EPCS).
This predominantly applies to prescribers who received access to iPrescribe via DrFirst, and did not register independently to use the app to e-prescribe.
This article will explain how to:
Set up iPrescribe Authenticator

You will use your Rcopia username and password to log in to iPrescribe.
- If you use Single Sign On (SSO) to access Rcopia, you may see a notification pop up in Rcopia, guiding you to set up iPrescribe Authenticator.
- Depending on your configuration, you may see a limited version of iPrescribe.
- Download iPrescribe to your phone
- Know your Rcopia username and password to log in to iPrescribe
- Know how to log in to EPCS Gold (using NPI, controlled substances password, active token)
To set up the iPrescribe Authenticator, you will use the iPrescribe app to scan a QR code from EPCS Gold.
Since you have limited time to scan the QR code, prepare by setting up EPCS Gold and iPrescribe according to the instructions provided below, then proceed to bind your device/activate iPrescribe Authenticator.
1. Download iPrescribe and log in to iPrescribe (using your Rcopia username and password).
If you use SSO to access Rcopia, you may see a notification pop up in Rcopia guiding you to set up iPrescribe Authenticator.
Depending on your configuration, you may see a limited version of iPrescribe.

2. If prompted, enable push notifications.

3. If prompted, enable iPrescribe to Open Scanner and allow iPrescribe to access the camera on your mobile device. Only do this when you are ready to scan the QR code from EPCS Gold in the next step ("Step 2: Log in to EPCS Gold").

Otherwise, you can manually get to Open Scanner, by:
- Going to the iPrescribe main menu
- Tapping Settings
- Selecting Enable as Two-Factor Authenticator. Only do this when you are ready to scan the QR code from EPCS Gold in the next step ("Step 2: Log in to EPCS Gold").

Depending on your integration, you may have navigated to EPCS Gold in one of three different ways:
- Going to the EPCS Gold website directly
- From Rcopia's main ("hamburger") menu > Utilities > Token Management
- From Rcopia's notification center (if you received a pop up notification to install iPrescribe Authenticator)
1. Log in to EPCS Gold using your NPI number and your passphrase (the password that you use to e-prescribe controlled substances).
To continue the log in process:
- From the Token drop-down menu, select an existing EPCS two-factor authenticator.
- Enter the one-time-pin (OTP) from that authenticator.

2. Click either the Tokens tab or the Manage Tokens link.

3. Click Add New Token.

4. Populate all fields:
- Token Manufacturer. Select OneSpan.
- Token Issuer. Select DrFirst.
- Token Type. Select Soft Token.
- Token Name. Enter a 'nickname' of your choice to distinguish your iPrescribe Authenticator from your other tokens. In the future, this nickname will appear in-workflow when you use two-factor authentication to e-prescribe controlled substances.

5. Have the iPrescribe scanner ready before selecting OK; selecting OK presents a QR code that will expire. When you're ready with your iPrescribe scanner, move to "Step 2 (cont.): Bind your device (scan QR code)."
8. When you're ready with your iPrescribes scanner, select OK on EPCS Gold to reveal the QR code .

9. On your iPrescribe app, you should have already opted to Open Scanner ("Step 1: Install and log in to iPrescribe").
Otherwise, you can manually get to Open Scanner, by:
- Going to the iPrescribe main menu
- Tapping Settings
- Selecting Enable as Two-Factor Authenticator.
10. Scan the QR code.

11. Scanning the QR code with the iPrescribe app activates iPrescribe Authenticator as your token. You should see a success message pop up in both iPrescribe and EPCS Gold.

Note: Prescribers who already use iPrescribe to electronically prescribe controlled substances (EPCS) will not be able to use iPrescribe as an authenticator because the DEA requires that your authenticator and prescribing software be on different devices.
Use iPrescribe Authenticator
1. Prepare to send an electronic controlled substance prescription, as you would normally.
2. When you are ready to sign and send the prescription, enter your signature password and select Send.
3. On the next screen, review the prescription details. Then, at the bottom of the screen:
- Enter your signing passphrase (the password used to electronically prescribe controlled substances).
- Select the name of your iPrescribe Authenticator from the drop-down menu.
- Select Sign to send a push notification to iPrescribe.

4. Open the push notification on your mobile device. Select Yes, continue to confirm you intend to electronically prescribe the controlled substance.

5. A confirmation message appears in iPrescribe and Rcopia.
Confirm the controlled substance was successfully sent to the pharmacy by going to the iPrescribe menu > History and selecting the prescription to review transmission details.
