Purpose: This article explains how to stop or cancel a prescription (Rx) in iPrescribe, and how to manage canceled prescription notifications from the pharmacy.
Audience: Active iPrescribe users
Prerequisite: You need an active prescription in the patient's Active Medications list.
Stopping and canceling a prescription are different actions with different results:
- Stopping a prescription removes it from the patient's Active Medications list. Stopping a prescription does not notify the pharmacy.
- Canceling a prescription sends a cancellation request to the pharmacy. Once you cancel a prescription, iPrescribe removes it from the patient's Active Medications list.
Stop a prescription
Stopping a prescription removes it from the patient's Active Medications list without notifying the pharmacy.
1. Log in to iPrescribe.
2. Tap the New Rx button.
3. Search for and select a patient. Do one of the following:
- Use the search bar at the top, then select the patient from the search results, or
- Select a patient under RECENT PATIENTS.
4. From the patient's profile, go to the Active Medications section.
5. Locate the correct medication and tap the arrow to the right of it.
Outcome: iPrescribe opens the Medication Review screen.
6. On the Medication Review screen, tap Stop Medication.
7. On the Stop Medication screen, fill out the following fields:
- Date Stopped — required
- Why is this med being stopped — optional
- Notes — optional
Add a reason and notes when the stop affects care coordination — for example, if another provider or the patient's pharmacy needs context for the change.
8. Tap the Stop Medication button.
Outcome: iPrescribe stops the prescription and returns you to the previous screen with an alert confirming the medication has been stopped.
Cancel a prescription
Canceling a prescription sends a cancellation request to the pharmacy and removes it from the patient's Active Medications list.
1. Log in to iPrescribe.
2. Tap the main menu icon in the top left corner.
3. Select History.
Outcome: The History screen opens, showing completed and undelivered prescriptions.
- If you are the signed-in provider, iPrescribe displays your name in the Filter by provider field.
- Filter by provider lets you select a specific provider.
- Filter by patient lets you select a specific patient.
4. Select the prescription you want to cancel.
5. Scroll to the bottom of the screen to Transmission History.
6. Tap Cancel at Pharmacy and Stop.
Outcome: iPrescribe opens the cancellation reason screen.
7. Select a reason for canceling. You can add Comments for Pharmacist to explain further.
8. Tap Cancel at Pharmacy and Stop.
Outcome: iPrescribe cancels the prescription and displays a message confirming the medication has been canceled.
Manage canceled prescription notifications
When a pharmacy confirms it received a cancellation, iPrescribe adds a notification to your Canceled Rxs queue for you to acknowledge.
After you cancel a prescription in iPrescribe or Rcopia, the pharmacy may send a notification confirming the cancellation. Acknowledge these notifications to clear them from your queue.
1. Tap the main menu icon in the top left corner.
2. Select Canceled Rxs.
Outcome: The Canceled Rxs screen opens and lists pending notifications.
3. Tap Acknowledge for each prescription, then tap Next to process the actions.
Outcome: iPrescribe processes the acknowledgments and removes them from the list.
