Purpose: This article explains what a soft token is and how to add one to your electronic prescribing of controlled substances (EPCS) account through either the EPCS Gold Prescriber Dashboard or E-Prescribing Desktop.
Audience: Providers enrolled in electronic prescribing of controlled substances (EPCS) via Experian who need to add a soft token (VIP Access by Symantec) to their account for generating one-time passcodes.
A soft token is an application that generates a one-time pin or one-time passcode (OTP) for electronic prescribing of controlled substances (EPCS).
Download VIP Access
Symantec makes an application called VIP Access that generates an OTP. Download it to your device before adding it to your account.
DEA device requirement
The DEA requires you to use the soft token on a different device from the one you use to prescribe a controlled substance.
Option A: Download from the Symantec website
- Go to https://vip.symantec.com/ and download VIP Access.
Option B: Download from an app store
- Open the Google Play Store or Apple App Store on your mobile device.
- Search for VIP Access by Symantec and install the app.
Add a soft token via the EPCS Gold Prescriber Dashboard
After downloading VIP Access, follow these steps to register your soft token through the EPCS Gold Prescriber Dashboard.
1. Log in to the EPCS Gold Prescriber Dashboard using your NPI number and passphrase (controlled substance password). The dashboard home screen appears.
2. Select a token registered to your account and enter a one-time passcode (OTP) from that token to complete the login. The dashboard home screen appears.
3. Select the Tokens tab at the top of the page or click Manage Tokens at the bottom right. The Token Management screen appears.
4. Select Add New Token. The Add Two Factor Authentication Token section appears below the button.
5. From the Token Manufacturer drop-down menu, select Symantec.

6. Fill out the token fields as follows:

| Token Nickname | Enter a nickname to identify this token later (for example, iPhone token app). |
| Credential ID | Enter the Credential ID from the top of the VIP Access app, without spaces. It will begin with SYMC###########, SYMZ###########, or VSST###########. |
| OTP | 6-digit code from the VIP Access app. Expires every 30 seconds. |
7. Select Save. Your soft token is now registered to your EPCS account.
Add a soft token via E-Prescribing Desktop
After downloading VIP Access, follow these steps to register your soft token through E-Prescribing Desktop.
1. Log in to E-Prescribing Desktop through your EMR or go directly to https://web3.drfirst.com/login. The Desktop home screen appears.
2. Select the main menu at the top left.
3. Select Utilities.
4. Select Token Management. The Token Management screen appears.
5. Log in to the EPCS Gold Prescriber Dashboard using your NPI and passphrase (controlled substance password). The dashboard home screen appears.
6. Select a token registered to your account and enter a one-time passcode (OTP) from that token to complete the login. The dashboard home screen appears.
7. Select the Tokens tab at the top of the page or click Manage Tokens at the bottom right. The Token Management screen appears.
8. Select Add New Token. The Add Two Factor Authentication Token section appears below the button.
9. From the Token Manufacturer drop-down menu, select Symantec.
