NPI registry

Purpose: This article explains what the NPI Registry is, how DrFirst uses NPI data, and what providers must do to ensure their registry information is accurate before registering for iPrescribe.
Audience: Providers who want to register for iPrescribe

NPI Registry

Overview of NPI registry

The NPI Registry is a comprehensive and free directory encompassing all active National Provider Identifier (NPI) records. For providers, keeping this registry updated is mandatory.

DrFirst relies on accurate data from the NPI Registry to satisfy various requirements, such as DEA mandates for token management. As a result, providers must take the following actions:

  • Update personal and professional details: Ensure your name, primary specialty (taxonomy), primary state, and state license number are present and current in the NPI Registry.
  • Modify primary specialty: If you have both primary and secondary specialties, update your primary specialty (taxonomy) to the one you would like DrFirst to recognize as primary in the registry.
  • Allow time for NPI Registry updates to process: DrFirst pulls updates from the NPI Registry each weekend and processes the data by the following Wednesday. Plan accordingly for successful self-registration and identity validation.

iPrescribe registration requirements

iPrescribe registration and the NPI registry

To register for iPrescribe, providers must ensure their first name, last name, state, and medical license number on their account profile correspond with the details in the NPI registry.

If an error message displays – “Your practice state must match your license state (XX). Need help?” – this indicates a discrepancy between your iPrescribe profile and the NPI registry. Specifically, your NPI registry profile should display the medical license for the state where you plan to use iPrescribe.

If the NPI registry contains inaccurate or outdated data, update your NPI Registry profile. Once the NPI Registry reflects your updates and the updates are processed by DrFirst, you can proceed with iPrescribe registration.
